Mazuri aquatic diet No. 4?

It is only in large quantities available, but my impression (from one week / 1 species) is that this is a fishfood to very seriously consider. Has any of you tried it?

Paul

Never before...which species have you tested?

I am currently trying with Xenotoca "San Marcos". My breeding group was overall not in a good state: the fish were on the thin side and juveniles developed bend body-shapes, presumably because of a vitamine deficiency. This despite that I fed them a good brand flake food as basis.

The fish reacted with a better overall colour, healthier appearance and even already now somewhat bigger juveniles being born. For deformities it is to early to tell, I don't believe that deformed fish will ever become normal but it will be interesting to see if other juveniles develop normally.

It is an interesting idea that coldwater fish need a higher dose of vitamine C to avoid developing such abnormalities compared to tropical fish. Perhaps Goodeids are in this respect more similar to coldwater fish. They definately have a much higher energy intake than average tropical fish, perhaps in this respect similar to fast growing hatchery trout ...

The food comes as large pellets, about 0.5 cm diameter. This is not a problem for (sub)adults: they react with a feeding-frenzy. About 4 or 5 pellets seem sufficient for my aquarium full of fish (15 adults, 50 or so subadults and juveniles).

Great, will have a try!

Now that we are some weeks further I can report that the condition of my Xenotoca is still excellent, but that some juveniles develop spinal deformities also on this diet.

I plan to try other "coldwater" fish diets, perhaps something from Hikari next.
