May in Calgary 25 - Canadian Goodeid Weekend

The 2025 Canadian Goodeid Weekend is being hosted in Calgary by your very own Calgary Aquarium Society and the Goodeid Working Group!

Friday - our guests from Mexico will be getting out of Calgary airport hopefully between 6 and 6:30pm. We will meet at Cold Garden Beverage Company at 7:00pm for icebreaker drinks - there are plenty of food options in the immediate vicinity.

Saturday - Doors open at 2pm for a 3pm start, till late. Where: Crescent Heights Community Association, 1101 2nd Street NW, Calgary, Alberta, T2M 2V7

Itinerary:

  • Initial Intro - Marcus Nicholls

  • Plan G - an Action Plan for the Conservation of Mexico's Goodeid Fishes - Michael Köck          Michael is a Conservationist based in Morelia, Mexico. He is Freshwater Conservation Manager of the Haus des Meeres - Aqua Terra Zoo in Vienna, Austria, member of the IUCN Redlist Freshwater Fish Specialist Group, Chair and European Chair of the Goodeid Working Group, and Chair of Plan G, a ten years conservation plan for Mexico's goodeid fishes.

  • Introduction to the genus Xiphophorus - Erwin Radax          Erwin is Vice Chair of the Xiphophorus Working Group, now residing in Morelia, Mexico. Erwin has been breeding Xiphophorus since 1982 and has completed numerous surveys of wild Xiphophorus in Mexico.

  • Goodeid Conservation Programs in Aqualab Morelia - Omar Dominguez          Omar is a Senior Researcher/Professor at the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolas de Hidalgo, Mexico. He has published many scientific papers in the field of evolutionary biology and ichthyofauna conservation, including the formal description of Allotoca zacapuensis.

  • Auction with a focus on goodeids and wild-type livebearers and a silent auction fundraiser for two signed original paintings of Zoogoneticus tequila and Skiffia francesae, and pizza and pop is included in the ticket price. All proceeds from ticket sales and silent auction will be used to cover the costs in hosting this event, and any excess will be donated to the GWG to fund vital freshwater conservation work in Mexico.

    Sunday - Dean Baayens will be touring Alberta's native bull trout habitat. Please note vehicle space is now extremely limited.
