Aphanius project Barcelona

seriouslyfish posted: 22.03.2011

Hi everyone! This is nothing to do with goodeids but I know some of you were here in Barcelona last year and know something of our project so thought this might be interesting. Yesterday our 'presidente' Manuel Zapater signed on our behalf an agreement allowing us to use a reclaimed camp site within the Delta del Llobregat natural park, close to Barcelona airport, for our work with Aphanius iberus. The space is incredible and includes 3 x 200m³ pools previously used for recreation. Yesterday the first 75 pairs were released by the mayor of Viladecans after signing the agreement. I'll add some images later but for now here's a video and link to a news story. :-)

Well tomorrow is the fourth annual 'Fiesta de Fartet' when the kids from some of the schools breeding Aphanius iberus as part of our education program come down to the Delta and release their fish. Let's see how it goes as the weather has been terrible all week meaning it could well be a mud bath with 40-odd 6-10 year olds to control!

Also had good chats with the Mike and the zoo in Vienna last week and have lots of new ideas. :-)

On 15/16 October we will release all the fish bred in the pools this year into a coastal lagoon. We have a few thousand so it will be hard but ultimately rewarding work. Pics and more information to follow after the release, but here's the locality: Laguna de Ca L'Arana:

Well we released 3500 captive-bred specimens yesterday!! The best part of that is there must be at least as many still in the breeding pools! We'll go back in a couple of weeks after we decide what to do with them, but my guess is we'll overwinter them in smaller pools ready for release in the Spring.

Photos to follow. :-)
